[ARCHIVED] Two declared deceased in I-20 accident

Two men were fatally injured in an accident that occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 on Wednesday afternoon.

Pedro Lara, 41, of Fort Worth, and Manuel Chavez, 50, of Grand Prairie, TX, were declared deceased on scene after the pickup they were in was struck from behind by a commercial truck on Interstate 20, in front of the Midland County Horseshoe Arena. The investigation into the accident showed that the pickup was stopped due to traffic congestion before their car was hit. The driver of the commercial truck, Antonio Zapata, Jr., 29, was not seriously injured.

The accident caused eastbound I-20 to be reduced to one lane for approximately six hours, and officers briefly shut down all directions of the south service road to conduct their investigation into the accident.

Next of kin have been notified. Charges are pending and the investigation into the accident continues.
