[ARCHIVED] Name released of deceased in officer-involved shooting

The name of the man was fatally shot after charging at an officer with a box cutter has been released by the Midland Police Department.

Joe Nevels, 42, of Midland, was pronounced deceased at Midland Memorial Hospital Saturday night after an officer-involved shooting behind Bill's Bottle Store, located at the intersection of Midland Drive and Neely Avenue.

MPD and the Midland Fire Department responded to the scene at approximately 8 p.m. regarding reports from employees of the store that Nevels had been exiting and entering the store and acting suspicious. He was believed by employees to have stolen from the store, was bleeding from cuts and acting suicidal.

When police officers arrived, Nevels was acting aggressively. He charged at an officer with a box cutter, and both officers fired rounds after attempting to use verbal commands to diffuse the situation.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave per normal protocol, pending an internal review. Texas Rangers with the Department of Public Safety are also investigating the use of force per normal protocol.

Next of kin has been notified.
