[ARCHIVED] MPD officer hospitalized, man arrested following weekend car accident

A Midland police officer remained in the hospital Sunday with injuries sustained from a car accident over the weekend.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, 24-year-old officer Xavier Ramon was driving southbound on Midland Drive in his patrol cruiser when he was struck on his driver's side at Anetta Drive by a westbound 2012 black Ford F-150. The investigation showed that the driver of the truck, 31-year-old Jose Garcia, disregarded the stop sign at the intersection. The collision pushed Ramon's squad car off the roadway, causing it to strike a residence near the intersection. Ramon's vehicle caught on fire, and Garcia attempted to flee the scene; citizens who were nearby were able to extinguish the flames and apprehend Garcia until police arrived. The Midland Fire Department also responded and used jaws of life to extricate Ramon from his vehicle.

Ramon, who was sworn in as an officer in December 2015, was transported to the hospital with several serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Garcia was treated and released from the hospital and arrested for intoxication assault on a peace officer Saturday morning. The investigation into the crash continues.
