Police safely disposed of a live grenade that was found near the intersection of South Lamesa Road and East New York Avenue on Friday morning.
Midland Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious object at 10:28 a.m. Friday in the 600 block of South Atlanta Street.
Officers on scene determined the object to be a military grade grenade with a live charge. The grenade was missing its pin and spoon, but had a rusted striker. The complainant who reported the object to police was said to have picked up the grenade without incident.
Residents were evacuated within a two block radius, and a portion of Lamesa Road was closed by police. MPD's Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit performed a successful counter charge, or controlled detonation, on the grenade. The FBI and two Midland Fire Department ambulances also responded to the scene.
No injuries or damage occurred during the incident. There are no suspects or leads available at this time. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Midland Police Department at 432-685-7108.
