The Midland Police Department received $28,644 in donations from local citizens that will be used to purchase about 70 heavy ballistic vests.
Medical Center Pharmacy representatives offered to solicit donations for the MPD to obtain the vests and collected almost $13,000 throughout August. They held a “Back the Blue” event on Aug. 20 which raised roughly $15,700 more from food, raffle and T-shirt sales as well as attendees’ donations. Members of Girl Scout Troop 46 also donated $629 from their cookie sales to the MPD.
Medical Center Pharmacy will present a check to the MPD at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Police and Communications Center, 601 N. Loraine St.
MPD is able to provide heavy ballistic vests to officers in specific units, SWAT, narcotics, directed patrol and K-9, but aims to outfit every officer with a vest.
