One man is deceased following an officer-involved shooting in Midland on Monday evening.
Kheyanev Littledog, 19, of Midland was shot by two officers after reaching for a gun in his waistband after being confronted by police.
Officers responded at around 7:30 p.m. to an area just southeast of downtown Midland in reference to a man who was said to be causing a disturbance and was in possession of a firearm. Officers located Littledog in the 500 block of East Industrial Avenue and found he had a handgun in his waistband. Dash camera footage and witness statements during the investigation revealed that Littledog was reaching for the gun when he was shot by two officers. Littledog was transported to the hospital and declared deceased shortly after. Officers found during the investigation that Littledog was also in possession of a second firearm in his backpack at the time of the shooting. Littledog was not licensed to carry a firearm.
The two officers involved, identified as 26-year-old Aaron Renz and 31-year-old Aaron Trevino, have been placed on administrative leave per normal protocol, pending an internal review. Renz is a patrol officer with 1 year and 10 months at MPD and Trevino is a K-9 officer who has served the department for 7 years and 10 months. Texas Rangers with the Department of Public Safety are also conducting a third party investigation into the officer-involved shooting per normal protocol.
Next of kin have been notified and the investigation continues.
