The state’s best sanitation workers will showcase their skills in Midland starting tomorrow during the Solid Waste Association of North America’s annual statewide Road-E-O competition.
Equipment operators will undergo a written test on Friday and timed challenges on Saturday that replicate obstacles they experience on their routes, such as navigating narrow alleyways and tight turns. Mechanics will compete Saturday to see who can most efficiently diagnose problems with vehicles used in solid waste.
Winners in each competition will take home bragging rights and the ability to represent Texas at the International Road-E-O.
"We are honored to host the best in our industry from across the state right here in Midland," said Solid Waste Director Morris Williams Jr. "This event not only stresses the importance of precision and safety in delivering important services to the public, but it also gives us a chance to connect with our colleagues and discuss emerging trends in our field."
A safety summit will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday at Towneplace Suites (5508 Deauville Blvd.), and competitions are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with the driving challenges taking place at Scharbauer Sports Complex (5514 Champions Dr.) and the mechanics competition taking place at the City of Midland Landfill (7904 S Garden City Hwy.).
