The City of Midland and the Downtown Midland Management District are asking Midlanders of all ages to think outside the box to create unique artwork to cover traffic utility boxes in the downtown area.
The “Think Outside the Box” art contest is now open to submissions from local aspiring artists. There will be two contests: one contest open to Midland residents ages 6-18, and a second contest open to all ages. Six winners will be selected from the children’s category, and five winners will be selected from the all-ages category.
Winning pieces of art will cover the sides of designated utility boxes, which are located near signalized intersections. Winners from the previous round of “Think Outside the Box”, held March through April of this year, are currently on display downtown along Wall Street. “We received such a positive response to the initial contest. We wanted to open it up again to give local artists a chance to showcase their talents,” shared Cristina Odenborg, Downtown Development Coordinator.
Artwork will be applied using vinyl on the boxes, which measure approximately 4.5 ft. tall by 2.5 ft. wide on two sides, and 4.5 ft. tall by 3.75 ft. wide on the other two sides. The designs or artwork must be submitted as a PDF or EPS file with a minimum resolution of 720 DPI. Bright colors are preferred to prevent the boxes from absorbing heat.
Submissions along with the artist’s name and age are due by email to email@example.com by November 17, 2017 and will be considered by a panel of local judges. Artists whose work is selected for the all-ages category will be awarded a $250 stipend, and children whose work is selected for the ages 6-18 category will be awarded a $100 stipend. Stipends are furnished by the Downtown Midland Management District. For more information, please call (432) 685-7263.
