BECOME A POLICE OFFICER

Training Process

*Applicants who successfully complete the selection process will then be required to complete the 17 week, 692 hour Regional Police Academy.

*Generally, applicants who have already completed an academy will proceed directly into the Field Training Program.

* Upon successful completion of the Academy, recruits are required to complete the Field Training Program.  The FTO program lasts approximately 17 weeks.  Recruits are teamed with Field Training Officers and are subjected to a variety of actual police activities while working through all of the shifts.

*Applicants with previous law enforcement experience will generally enter into an accelerated FTO program, lasting only 8-10 weeks.

*Following successful completion of the Field Training Program, the new officer is assigned to a patrol shift in the Field Operations Bureau.  All police officers are on probation for a period of one (1) year following the date of appointment.

*Any or all of the above mentioned time periods are subject to change based on the performance of the recruit or the changing requirements of the Department.
