History and Long Term Plans

HISTORY
The Utilities Administration Department has traditionally been the management arm for the water and sewer divisions.  Actual make-up of the Department began in the mid 1960's and consisted of the Water Production (wells), Distribution (water line maintenance), Collection (sewer line maintenance), Construction (water and sewer line extensions), Meter Shop (water meter repair and installation) and Water Pollution Control Plant.  In 1970, the Water Purification Plant was added and the Distribution, Collection, Construction, and Meter Shop were moved to other Departments.  In 1990, the Water and Sewer Operations, Sanitation, and Landfill divisions were moved to Utilities Administration.

PRESENT
The Utilities Administration Department currently manages the Water Production, Water Pollution Control Plant, Effluent Farm, Water Purification Plant, Water and Wastewater Operations, Water and Wastewater Maintenance, Solid Waste, and Landfill Divisions.   Four superintendents manage these eight divisions.

FUTURE
The drought continues and is beginning its 16th year. We saw a slight break in the drought from 2004 to 2007. Only three years since 1994 did we get our annual average rainfall. Therefore, water supply is lower in the lakes.  With the delivery of Lake Ivie water in March of 1995, our current developed supplies should last into 2020, and with T-Bar Ranch into 2060.  We are involved in State and area wide studies to identify future water sources.

The Water Pollution Control Plant will treat our needs until the population approaches 130,000, with minor improvements every ten years or so.

We received our Landfill permit amended to allow increased aerial fill in October 1997.  This provides us landfill space into 2060.
