CITY MANAGER SIGNS CONTRACT

Courtney Sharp is officially Midland’s new City Manager.  Sharp’s signed contract arrived today, September 3, 2008.

His first day on the job is scheduled for October 1, 2008. 

During the August 26, 2008, City Council meeting, the City Council voted 6-1 to extend a job offer to Sharp.

He is the current City Manager in Mount Pleasant. 

The contract includes a salary of $158,000 and six months’ severance.  The employment agreement is structured to strengthen the council-manager relationship by enhancing the excellence and continuity of the management of the city for the benefit of its citizens.

FOCUS GROUPS

What do Midlanders want in a new City Manager?  This is the question the Midland City Council asked a variety of citizens.  Several focus groups took part in the process of selecting Midland’s next City Manager.

In April, dozens of residents, business leaders, city employees, former council members and mayors, church leaders, and civic leaders met with the Mercer Group, the consulting firm hired to handle the recruitment of a new City Manager.  The participants provided input regarding the City of Midland and what any potential candidate should know about the city they call home.  In addition, they provided a list of characteristics the City Manager should possess. 

The information provided by the focus groups allowed the consultant to review the applicants for the position while fully understanding the expectations of Midlanders and who might be a good fit for their city.
