MAYOR CANON ATTENDS
U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS

Mayor Mike Canon and City Manager Rick Menchaca will participate in the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C.  Over 1,000 leaders, including 200 mayors, plus business leaders and top federal officials, convene January 25-27, 2006, for the 74th winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The Conference of Mayors provides an opportunity to mayors to share best practices with each other and the nation on what is working in America’s cities.   The focus will be on key issues and challenges affecting cities including Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, & Wilma, poverty, homeland security, the Avian Flu, Amtrak, Community Development Block Grants, jobs and the  economy, eminent domain, gun violence and youth, telecommunications, the environment, and public education.

Many top speakers are participating including Senator Lamar Alwzander (TN), Senator Sam Brownback (KS), Senator Hillary Clinton (NY), Senator Mary Landrieu (LA), Senator Harry Reid (NV), Congressman Danny Davis (IL), Congressman John D. Dingell (MI), Congressman Michael Turner (OH), Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alfonso Jackson, New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, Biloxi  (MS) Mayor A.J. Holloway, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa.
