NEW POPULATION ESTIMATE
The City of Midland is growing and at a healthy rate. In 2005, Midland’s population reached an all time high of 101,033. According to records, this is the first time Midland has exceeded the 100,000 mark.
The 2004 population estimate was 99,641. Midland’s population increased 1.4% with the addition of 1,392 people.
The number is based on residential occupancy. This includes both apartments and housing. The vacancy rate per single family was reduced to 4.5%. The occupancy rate for apartments was raised to 97%. The figures take into account the number of building permits, demolition permits, and annexation.

MIDLAND PD TEAMS UP WITH MC
The Midland Police Department is joining forces with Midland College to help arm citizens with valuable information.
Four classes will be taught this spring focusing on issues such as community awareness, gangs, identification theft, and keeping kids safe online. An officer with the Midland Police Department, specializing in each area, will instruct the one-night courses. The first course will be taught on February 7, 2006, from 6:45 – 8:45 p.m. at the Advanced Technology Center, 3200 W. Cuthbert.
The Police Department and Your Community (Feb. 7) will overview the police department, crime trends, criminal patterns, and explain what to do if you are the victim of crime.
In Understanding the Impact of Gangs in Midland (March 14), students will learn to recognize gang dress, tattoos, and graffiti, how to prevent gang participation, and discuss what steps to take if you suspect someone is in a gang.
Protecting Your Identity (March 28) will explore what it means to have your identity stolen, the how and why, and how to recover and prevent identity theft.
In Keeping Children Safe Online (April 4), learn how to keep children protected while they are online. Topic will include how to track online activity, understanding chat room language, deleting cookies, and online safety rules for children and adults.
