The City Council will recognize an outstanding employee for his long-time service to the Special Olympics.  The event will take place at the beginning of the February 14, 2006, City Council Meeting at 10:00 a.m.

Detective Richard Candelaria was recently inducted into the Special Olympics Texas Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame.  He is just one of six people ever inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Candelaria has dedicated more than 14 years to the Torch Run and currently serves as the Texas Law Enforcement Torch Run Director and as a member of the Special Olympics Texas Board of Directors.  He has represented Texas at two Special Olympics World Games, running in the final leg of the Torch Run.

Special Olympics Texas provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to over 23,885 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

In Texas, the Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1985 and has grown to become one of the largest in the nation.  In the last decade, Torch Run has contributed over $11 million through the dedication of thousands of law enforcement personnel fundraising.

FEBRUARY 14th CITY COUNCIL BRIEFS

During the regular meeting, the City Council will consider purchasing 23 Chevrolet Impalas. The purchase is a departure from Crown Victorias previously purchased. A life cycle cost analysis reveals approximately $5,000 less cost over a 100,000 mile life to own and operate the Impalas inclusive of any diagnostics the city may have to buy and fix them. Used by many major agencies including Lubbock, Odessa, Fort Worth, and Dallas, the Impalas average 12-13% better gas mileage and compare favorably in performance. The Council will consider three items that will give CDBG areas much needed improvements. The first project includes curb and gutter paving for the CDBG target area and Lee Street. This will include the 1500 & 1600, 1800 & 1900 block of E. Kentucky and the 1000 block of Lee Street. The Council will consider awarding the bid. The second item includes the Council consideration of going out for bid to reconstruct the street and drainage improvements for the 900-1000 blocks of S. Dallas and the 1200-1400 blocks of S. McKenzie. The third item includes the Council considering plans and authorizing advertisement of bids for sidewalk improvements in the 2004 CDBG target area. The sidewalks will improve pedestrian access to the newly developed Bradford Park and support the housing development in the target area. The City Council will consider accepting a FEMA Public Assistance Grant.  The grant, in the amount of $22,270.38 is 100% reimbursement for expenses associated with Hurricane Rita.  The City provided 62 employees for the operation of a local shelter for hurricane evacuees.  The expenses are reimbursable under a FEMA disaster declaration.  Contact: Jerry Petree/Interim Fire Chief at 685.7330
