MARCH 21st CITY COUNCIL BRIEFS

In an effort to continue the development of Midland’s planned 25-mile hike/bike trail system; the Community Services Department is seeking Council approval to apply for two TxDOT Enhancement Grants.  The first trail would begin at the Loop 250 & Thomason Dr. interchange, travel west through the Scharbauer Sports Complex, and end at the Deauville Rd. and Highway 191 service rd.  The second trail begins at the Highway 191 service rd., travels north on Heritage Blvd., north on Crowley, through C.J. Kelly Park, and north on Holiday Hill Road ending at Greathouse Elementary.  Contact: Monette Burke/Director of Community Services at 685.7354

In addition, the Council will consider approval of another grant that would provide funding for landscaping and beautification along Business Interstate 20.  The Development Services Department is seeking the grant from TxDOT.  Contact: Chuck Swallow/Director of Department Services at 685.7202

The Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone’s annual report will go before the Council for approval.  The downtown area has experienced growth in assessed value of real property.  During 2005, four homes were completed by Midland Community Development Corporation and four homes completed by Midland Habitat.  The Midland Hilton, new waterlines, and right of way beautification are among the improvements in the TIRZ this year.  Contact: Cameron Walker/Planning Division Manager at 685.7405

The City Council will discuss the 2006 Community Development Block Grant Target Area Selection Committee’s recommendation.  The committee has decided on a recommendation for the focus expenditure of 2006/07 CDBG funds.  The recommended area is generally bounded by Florida on the north, Connell on the east, Carter on the south, and Johnston on the west.  The committee also recommends that infrastructure (including street paving with curb and gutter and sidewalks), home improvements, and code enforcement be priority.  Contact: Sylvester Cantu/CDBG Administrator
