MLK CENTER EXPANSION GRAND OPENING

The renovations are complete and newer, larger space is now available at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.  The public is invited to see the changes as a weekend of activity is planned.

Friday, March 31, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., citizens are encouraged to walk through the newly renovated center.  There will be entertainment by the True-Lite Choir and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  Door prizes and food will be a part of the evening.  A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday, April 1, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., the MLK Community Center will host a Community Health Fair.  Children can receive immunizations for just $10.

On both nights, the Odd Couple will be presented in the new auditorium from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

The renovations were made possible by a matching grant received from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.  The total amount of the grant is $1.5 million with the City of Midland providing a 50/50 match.  Through the grant application process, public input was solicited expressing the need for additional spectator space in the existing gymnasium and a new multi-purpose, performing arts area.

The grand opening events are made possible through sponsors including Sam’s Barbeque, Dollar Store, and Sundown Market.
