CODE ENFORCEMENT & POLICE SECURE VACANT BUILDING

City of Midland Code Enforcement and the Police Department will team up to secure a vacant downtown building, making it safer for the community.  Today, March 30, 2006, at 1:30 p.m., police officers will clear the building at 300 N. Pecos (corner of Pecos and Illinois), ensuring no one is inside, before it is sealed up.

On November 22, 2005, the Midland City Council declared the building a public nuisance.  This means that the building is unfit for human habitation and it is a danger to public health, safety, and welfare.  Contractors have been working to board up the five-story building built in 1969.

Both the Midland Police Department and M.I.S.D. Police have had problems with young people using the vacant building as a hangout.  The building has been vandalized and spray-painted with graffiti.

Anyone who attempts to enter the sealed secured building will be citied for criminal trespass.
