APRIL 11th CITY COUNCIL BRIEFS

  • During a 9:00 a.m. briefing session, the City Council will listen to a presentation and then discuss Desalination of groundwater.  The desalination process could be a possible source for potable water.  Desalination is the process of removing dissolved salts from water through a thermal process or through membranes.  The two-membrane process includes electro-dialysis and reverse osmosis (RO).  Most Texas plants use RO.  There are 11,000 desalination plants in 126 nations.  Twelve percent of the world’s desalination capacity is in the Caribbean and Florida.  The first facility in Texas, built in 1981, is still in operation in El Paso County.  Abilene is the largest desalination plant in Texas.  Media Contact: Kay Snyder/Director of Utilities at 685.7261
  • During the regular meeting, the City Council will consider the first phase of four phases of stop sign removal and/or installation.  One of the Council’s top priorities is to examine the current flow of traffic through the entire city.  This consist of a stop sign evaluation as well as signal light synchronization and a speed limit study.  During the evaluation of stop signs, the city was broken into quadrants.  All three and four way stop sign intersections were studied.  Northwest Midland is the first area the Council will consider.  In all, 13 intersections will have four-way stops changed to two-way and two other intersections will have additional stop signs.  The study has revealed that traffic patterns have changed as neighborhoods and businesses evolve throughout the entire city.  Media Contact: Gary Saunders/Transportation Manager at 685.7280
