CANOPIES GO UP AT DOUG RUSSELL POOL

The City of Midland is currently in the process of completing renovations at Doug Russell Pool, 900 N. Midland Dr.  Installation of seven new canopies is now underway.  The media is invited to get video or take a picture of the canopies going up.

The new canopies will provide shade on the south deck, the concession area, and a new children’s area.

Other renovations include: replacing the two diving boards and stands, replacing the fence between the children’s area and the pool, and new lights on the outside of pool perimeter.

Doug Russell Pool is the City’s oldest public pool over 40 years old.  The pool will open to the public for the summer on Saturday, May 27th.

MAY 23rd CITY COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

  • During a 9:00 a.m. briefing, the City Council will listen to a presentation from the Museum of the Southwest Steering Committee regarding planned improvements to the Marion Blakemore Planetarium.  The Planetarium received a grant from the Texas State Legislature for the planned improvement of the projection system and addition of a science education classroom.  The committee responsible for the oversight of this project is seeking an additional $660,000 to fund a permanent space science exhibit, program support, and salary support to fund an Astronomy Education position.  To help meet their objectives, the Museum is requesting a matching grant from the City in the amount of $200,000 to be matched from private funds at a two to one ratio.  The City of Midland owns the Planetarium and leases it to the Museum of the Southwest.  Media Contact: Monette Burke/Director of Community Services at 685.7354
  • In an effort to streamline site development review, building material, and design standards, the City Council will consider two items on second reading that better define such items in the City Code.  Site Plan Review Standards will focus on non-residential zoning districts.  The standards would establish an administrative site plan review process to address exterior building materials, screening elements, parking lot design, and outdoor lighting.  The purpose is to promote quality development that will enhance our city.  The Council will also consider changes to the Zoning Code to refine and revise the regulation of primary buildings, accessory structures, and fencing in residential zoning districts.  The streamlining will help lay out standards for developers and help maintain aesthetics, especially along Midland’s main corridors.
