L.I.F.E. IN A BOTTLE
The Midland Fire Department is teaming up with HomeCare Plus, Hospice of Midland, and Dr. John Bray to assist those who live alone or may find themselves in a situation where they cannot communicate their medical information. A press conference will be held on June 7, 2007, at 9:30 a.m., at central fire, 1500 W. Wall, to introduce the L.I.F.E. in a Bottle program.
L.I.F.E. stands for Listed Information For Emergencies. Each recipient receives a bottle, which looks like a large pill bottle, but is marked bright and clearly with the L.I.F.E. There is a form inside the bottle in which the recipient, or a family member, can provide important medical information such as allergies, current medications, and medical diagnoses. The bottle is then placed in a clearly visible place inside the recipient’s refrigerator. Another brightly colored sticker is placed on the recipient’s door to alert emergency personnel that the resident has L.I.F.E. in a bottle in the refrigerator.
In an emergency, the bottle can be easily located by family members, caregivers, or emergency personnel to expedite the appropriate medical care. Complete instructions are located inside each bottle.
The bottles will be available at HomeCare Plus, Dr. Bray’s office, and each Midland Fire Department Station.
BLOCK CAPTAINS APPRECIATION PARTY
The Midland Police Department is gearing up for the annual National Night Out. An appreciation party and training for block captains will be held at Centennial Plaza on June 28, 2007, from 6-9:00 p.m.
The event will help raise awareness about the upcoming National Night Out event scheduled for Tuesday, August 7, 2007. Information will be provided to help residents host a successful block party. It is on this evening that neighbors come together hosting potluck dinners and block parties throughout the City.
National Night Out is a nation-wide crime prevention activity designed to heighten crime prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations; and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and are fighting back against crime.
KIDS ACADEMY
The Midland Police Department will host a Kids Police Academy. The class begins Monday, June 25 and ends on Friday, June 29, 2007. Classes will be conducted from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. each day. Parents are encouraged to sign their kids up for the free event.
The participants, between the ages of 7-10, will have the opportunity to learn about the police department and hear from officers and detectives. Sessions are planned in the dispatch/911 area, with patrol, crime scene investigations, bike patrol, municipal court, Culver Youth Center, K-9, SWAT, mobile substation, gang unit, EOD, and gun safety at the firing range.
Another Kids Academy will be held the week of July 9th. The ages for that session will range from 11 – 15.
Last year, the department hosted the academy for children and grandchildren of department employees. The MPD wanted to open the event to the entire community with hopes of hosting the academies annually.
