WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

It is the time of year when temperatures rise and the demand for water increases.  Last summer, during our high usage period, Midlanders used 35 million gallons per day – that’s 369 gallons per person!  We can all do our part to help conserve water.  Residents can make simple changes in their daily routines to help preserve our most valuable natural resource.

The City of Midland has a Water Conservation Plan, which is aimed at reducing each person’s daily consumption by one gallon per day each year, starting last year.  This year that number is two gallons, reaching a reduction of five gallons per person per day in five years.

Here are some tips to consider:

  • Water early in the morning to avoid evaporation.  Best times are after 6 p.m. and before 10 a.m.
  • Explore watering options and know how much your type of grass needs (Bermuda typically needs ½” a week).  Work through your homeowners association to voluntarily alternate watering schedules in your neighborhood.
  • Set emptied tuna cans around your yard to help determine how much water each area is receiving.
  • Shorten your shower by one minute – save 7-10 gallons of water.
  • Fix dripping faucets and leaking toilets – a dripping faucet can waste as much as 2,000 gallons each year.
  • Use low flow toilets and front-load washers.
  • If you have a swimming pool, use a cover.  This can cut the loss of water by evaporation by 90%.
  • Use a broom, rather than a hose, to clean sidewalks or driveways.
  • Defrost food in the refrigerator or in a microwave instead of running hot water over the food.

By making a few changes, residents can reduce their water consumption, their water bill, and feel like they are doing their part to help preserve the future of our water supply for generations to come.

JUNE SALES TAX REVENUES

The City of Midland has collected this month's revenue from the State Comptroller's Office.  The total amount of revenue received was $1,517,385.

This month's figure reflects a 26.64% increase or a $319,222 increase from June 2005.

The year-to-date total sales tax revenue for fiscal year 2005-2006 is up 19.47% or an $2,295,316 increase from last year's totals at this time.  Fiscal year-to-date actual sales tax revenue is $14,082,999.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; June collection is based on April sales.
