MEN’S HEALTH SCREENING

There is still time to take part in the City of Midland Health & Senior Services Men’s Health free screenings.

On June 21 & 22, 2006, men can have free cholesterol and prostate lab tests.  Screenings will be done by appointment only.  Anyone who is interested should quickly call 681.7613 to make an appointment.  All tests will be performed at the Midland Health Department, 3303 W. Illinois.

The event is held in conjunction with National Men’s Health Week.  The Midland Health Department is encouraging all men to take an active role in their wellness.  This is the first year the Health Department has hosted a wellness clinic for men and hopes the event will become an annual affair each June.  The Women in Red campaign, which takes place the week of Mother’s Day in May, offers free screenings to women.

MFD PARTICIPATES IN NATIONAL STAND DOWN

Beginning Wednesday, June 21, 2006, through Friday, June 23, 2006, the Midland Fire Department will join other departments across the nation for the second annual Fire Fighter Safety Stand Down.  All nine stations will participate.  The International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Association of Fire Fighters sponsor the event.

Each of the Midland Fire Department’s three shifts will have an opportunity to participate.  The event urges all departments, career and volunteer, to suspend all non-emergency activity and instead focus entirely on firefighter safety. This year's Stand Down will highlight emergency vehicle safety.  The purpose is to raise the level of awareness toward fire fighter safety and call attention to the unacceptable number of fire fighter deaths and injuries.

A stand down is a method used by the military to correct an issue that has been identified as a problem throughout its ranks. This stand down is to raise the level of awareness toward fire fighter safety and call attention to the unacceptable number of deaths and injuries plaguing fire departments.

Last year, an estimated 10,000 fire departments participated in the Fire Fighter Safety Stand Down, including the MFD.
