JUNE 27th CITY COUNCIL MEETING

  • The City Council will consider approving funding for an upgrade to run the New World Records Management System.  The current system has outgrown all software upgrades.  The new computer software would be purchased from Pinnacle Business Systems of Midland for $94,007.66.  Media Contact: Chuck Gibson/Director of Communication and Information Systems at 685.7484
  • The City Council will also consider upgrading the technology firefighters use when making a run to an emergency.  Replacing the old Opticom system with the newer model will eliminate “unauthorized” use, as it will only recognize legitimate devices that have coded signals.  The Emergency Vehicle Preemption System helps firefighters by changing the traffic signal light.  The cost of the new system is approximately $160,000.  Media Contact: Gary Saunders/Transportation Manager at 685.7288
  • The Midland Police Department is requesting Council authorization to accept a grant to help combat underage drinking.  The $35,000 grant will help pay for extra enforcement and education of the drinking laws.  In 2005, the MPD recorded 68 vehicle crashes in which drivers under the age of 21 had consumed alcohol.  MPD records also show that in 2005, 511 citations were issued and 679 arrests were made for minors in possession and/or consuming alcohol; 90 arrests were made for publicly intoxicated minors; and 31 arrests were made for DWI violations by persons under 21 years of age.  Media Contact: Chief John Urby/MPD at 685.7593
  • At approximately 12:15 p.m., the City Council will recess to 610 South Atlanta to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for South Pueblo Park Phase II.  Construction will begin in August for the affordable housing project as part of the City’s strategy to reinvest into an area that has been targeted by City Council members for community development.
