SCAM WARNING
The Midland Police Department would like to warn citizens of the dangers of cashing “lottery checks.”
Local residents have received lottery checks sent from lotteries around the world such as Nigeria, Canada, London, Germany, or any other country. The lotteries claim that if the citizen will cash the check sent to them and send the lottery company back 10%, the resident will then receive a larger sum of money. The checks are fraudulent.
Approximately 50-60 citizens have cashed the check (usually ranging in amount from $3-4,000), sent the 10% back, and kept their portion. After the check is found to be fraudulent, the banks take the money out of the account or freeze their money in the bank. The 10% sent to the “lottery company” is gone.
The reports have been received this summer.
