APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR MDC BOARD
The City of Midland is currently accepting applications for citizens interested in serving on the Midland Development Corporation Board (MDC). Two of the five members terms will expire on January 15, 2007. Applications will be accepted through October 20, 2006, with the City Council making consideration of the applications in November.
The MDC Board was created in January 2002 following voter approval of a quarter cent sales tax in November of 2001. The Board is responsible for carrying out an investment policy and considers and reviews all requests for Economic Development funding based on revenues from the quarter cent sales tax earmarked for Economic Development.
Application packets are available through the City Secretary’s Office on the third floor of City Hall, 300 N. Loraine, or by calling 685.7432. The packet includes an application which should accompany a resume outlining any prior experience with economic development along with employment and educational background. Applicants are also encouraged to list reasons why they would be an asset to the Board. Board members must be a registered voter of the City and have no outstanding indebtness to the City.
The 4A Board meets once a month. Members are not paid for their service.

CITY ENTERS NEW FISCAL YEAR
October 1, 2006, marked the beginning of a new fiscal year for the City of Midland. Although forecasters don’t have a crystal ball, optimism remains high at City Hall for a positive year.
The FY06/07 Budget presented many challenges in preparing. The $140 million total budget reflects a 7.67% increase from the FY2005-06 Budget.
The property tax rate will decrease 5.5 cents to .5870/$100 valuation. The City’s property tax rate is at its lowest since 1990.
The Budget includes market adjustments to employee salaries, technology enhancements, and facility & equipment repairs.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT
The Midland Police Department was called to the scene of a motorcycle accident at approximately 11:19 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2006. The accident took place in the 1400 block of N. Midland Drive.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the motorcycle, 20-year-old Christopher Prado of Midland (9-19-86) had just left Fast Freddy’s at Midland Drive and Illinois. Reports indicate that there was a disturbance at Fast Freddy’s before his departure. Prado headed north on Midland Drive on his motorcycle. While driving north on Midland Drive, he hit a curb and lost control. Prado landed in a residential yard at the northeast corner of the intersection. He was not wearing a helmet.
Prado remains in critical condition at Midland Memorial Hospital. There were no others injured or involved in the accident.
The investigation is ongoing.
CITY AUCTION
The City of Midland will participate in a live auction on Saturday, October 14, 2006, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The auction will be held at 1009 W. Industrial. A preview will take place on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
Surplus property will be auctioned off. This will include office furniture, desks, chairs, file cabinets, electronics, monitors, saws, portable sign stands, heat activated sign faces, and over 50 bicycles.
