ANNUAL FIRE PREVENTION POSTER CONTEST
The City of Midland Fire Department will host its annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Judging will take place beginning at 9:30 a.m. on October 9, 2006, at the Central Fire Station, 1500 W. Wall. Winners of the contest will be awarded their prizes on October 11, 2006 at Central Fire Station at 10:00 a.m.
This year’s theme is “Watch What You Heat.” This theme was chosen to help reduce the #1 cause of home fires, which is unattended cooking. Students grades K through 12 will compete. Grades are divided into categories including Primary, Intermediate, Junior High, and High School.
The poster contest is held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week October 8 – 14, 2006. Fire Prevention Week is held every year during the week of October 9th and is the result of the devastating Chicago fire that occurred in 1871. This fire burnt through most of Chicago killing over 250 people and leaving over 100,000 people homeless. Fire Prevention Week was established to remind citizens of the dangers of fire and how to prevent them.
The Midland Fire Department will be hosting several fire station tours throughout the month of October as well as presenting numerous fire safety programs to school children and businesses in Midland. The Fire Marshals office will have a display at Midland Park Mall starting October 12th through October 14th and will be providing fire safety information, demonstrating Pluggie the Robot, and displaying a 1928 fire engine. Call for program information and times.

OCTOBER 10th CITY COUNCIL MEETING
- During a 9:00 a.m. briefing, the City Council will listen to a presentation from the Midland Odessa Transportation Alliance Network (MOTRAN). The group periodically updates the City Council regarding ongoing projects as well as plans for the future. Media Contact: Marcus Johnston/Assistant City Manager at 685.7200
- During the regular meeting, the Council will consider approving a contract for the purpose of improvements at Doug Russell Pool. Renovations and improvements to the Doug Russell Pool Bathhouse facility have been an ongoing process since 2001. Bids to renovate the existing bathhouse have twice been solicited, but each bid was over budget. This past summer, five shade structures, two new diving boards, and new lights were added to the facility. Staff worked in-house to design a new bathhouse, new spray park, and chemical storage area. The in-house work saved $30,000 on the project. The remainder of the project will be paid for with Certificates of Obligation. Council will be asked to award the bid to Hilliard Construction. Upon approval, city crews will begin in-house demolition of the existing bathhouse. The estimated completion date is May 2007. Media Contact: Monette Burke/Director of Community Services at 685.7354
- The City Council will consider approval of the purchase of two new ambulances. One ambulance is due to replacement cycle and the other is for additional service in North Midland. A new ambulance, currently a temporary one, went into service at the fire station on north Midland Drive. Until now, the ambulance located at Haynes and Midkiff was the only one in service north of Golf Course Road. Due to the growth of Midland, particularly in northwest Midland, calls for EMS service have increased in this area. The new ambulance will help reduce response time and assist when the ambulance from Haynes and Midkiff is on another call. Media Contact: Chief Russ Conley/MFD at 685.7330
- The City Council will consider a developer agreement that would help build over 150 homes in east Midland. This is the first attempt for the City to enter into an agreement with a developer for the purpose of building quality workforce housing (homes in the range of $80,000 - $160,000). Hollandale Heights will be the first project in which the City has offered developer incentives to build quality workforce housing. For each of the developer’s planned 100 homes to be built in the $107,000-$133,000 range, the agreement will allow for a payment of $4,250 for each one sold. For each of the planned 58 homes in the $134,000-$160,000 range, the developer will receive $4,000 for each sold. The agreement helps address the need for quality workforce housing as outlined in the City of Midland’s goals for economic development.
