CITY AWAITS ARRIVAL OF VACCINE

The City of Midland Health Department is awaiting the arrival of this year’s flu vaccination.  The shots were ordered back in January.  Although Health Department officials say this is the latest the City of Midland has gone into the fall without receiving the vaccination, they want to remind citizens that it will not be too late to administer the shots.

Midland is not unlike other cities across the state.  Many cities have not received their supply of the flu vaccination.  The City of Midland ordered its shipment from Sanofi-Pasteur.  The vaccines, or at least a portion of the vaccines, usually arrive by mid-October, however, Health Department officials hope the dosages will make it to Midland by the end of October or the first of November.

Once the vaccinations arrive, the Health Department will set up flu shot clinics and times.  The cost per vaccination will be $15.00.

Those wanting the vaccination now should contact their local physician as many doctors have received their shipment.

It is recommended that persons over the age of 55, pregnant woman past their first trimester, children under 5, and those with weakened immune systems receive the shot.

The City of Midland will inform the public, through the media, of when the vaccinations arrive and the times and dates for flu clinics.

REMEMBER…911 FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY

It was a busy hour for dispatchers in the City of Midland this morning.  From 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., a total of 431 calls were made to the dispatch center; a majority of those calls were made to 911.

Late this morning, October 16, 2006, TXU Electric experienced a loss of power to over 16,000 west Midland customers.  This not only affected homes but a number of traffic light signals.  Motorists and citizens called 911 to seek information.

To help ensure that all customers receive the service they deserve, 911 dispatchers want to remind everyone not to call 911 unless their situation is an emergency.  During the situation this morning with the power outage, unless someone was calling to report an accident as a result of the lights being out, citizens should have utilized a non-emergency number (685.7110).  This allows dispatchers to respond quickly to true emergency calls for help in a timely manner.

Citizens calling non-emergency or 911 during such situations should also be patient with dispatchers.  When they are receiving a number of calls, it is important for them to move quickly to the next call in an attempt to respond to all emergencies.

At no time this morning were any 911 calls dropped (missed), however lines were so tied up that no calls could be made from the dispatch center.

Thank you for helping us remind all citizens of the proper use of 911.

***TXU reports that a squirrel and a bird were on their equipment at the Midland West Substation located near Cuthbert and Alpine causing the outage.  They report that by 11:35 a.m., power was back on for all those affected.  TXU Media Contact: Mike Nieto/Odessa District Manager at 580.1920
