CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES HONORED
What started out as good planning and preparation has turned into an award winning idea. On Thursday, October 26, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. the Midland Police Department will honor two employees for their innovation in helping make their job, as well as the job of detectives, much easier. The event will take place in the third floor conference room just prior to a command staff meeting.
Records Supervisors Karrie Bragg and Dalilia Venegas are recent winners of the City of Midland employee recognition program $AVE (save). The program encourages employees to submit their money savings ideas for possible implementation.
Karrie and Dalilia had budgeted and set aside $28,000 to purchase licenses for detectives needing New World programs. New World is the lap top computer system MPD officers use to input information in the field. The employees came up with a way that the detective could directly input information into the system without needing any new programs.
Their idea saved detectives time, saved the City of Midland $28,000, and the pair were awarded $375 each.
The $AVE program honors employees from all City of Midland departments.
KEEPING MIDLAND’S KIDS SAFE
With trick or treaters hitting the streets and the holidays fast approaching, the City of Midland and Midland Police Department want to remind citizens of a tool they can arm themselves with to help make it a safe time for the entire family.
One year ago, the City launched a new feature on its website, www.midlandtexas.gov, that is designed to help keep the public informed. With a click of a computer mouse, citizens can view sex offender information. The information is even broken down by zip codes, or alphabetically, with the addresses of registered sex offenders. Their pictures, addresses, and information about the offense(s) are listed.
In Midland County, there are currently 203 (61 in Midland County and 142 in the City) registered sex offenders. Not all sex offenders are child predators, however approximately 50% of Midland’s Sexual Assaults involve juvenile victims.
MPD has changing its approach to tracking registered sex offenders. Beginning last year, instead of one officer handling all offenders, each patrol officer is assigned one offender. They visit them quarterly to ensure their registration information, including place of residency and work, is still accurate. Some offenders are tracked by their probation or parole officer, however, once their time is served, they become the responsibility of the MPD and Midland County Sheriff’s Office.
Citizens can also access the statewide Department of Public Safety sex offender database from the City’s site.
During the last year, the sex offender information is one of the most visited features on the City’s website.
