COLD CASE RESURFACES

Midland Police Department Detectives, with the assistance of the Texas Rangers, are actively working a nine-year-old Murder case with the discovery of new information.

On September 27, 1997, Lula Belle Klingler, then 92-years-old, was murdered in her central Midland home.  Lula Belle died as a result of multiple stab wounds.  There was no sign of forced entry into the home at 2209 Brunson. 

Since 1997, the investigation has continued to obtain the evidence necessary to charge and convict the responsible party.  With the aid of recent information, authorities believe they may soon have the answers they need.

Detectives are currently awaiting the results of new lab information.  The results are expected back in approximately two weeks.

SEXUAL ASSAULT ARREST

Midland Police have arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the Sexual Assault of a female.

David VanHouten (5-5-76) was arrested today, November 2, 2006, following an investigation.  He is charged with two counts of Sexual Assault of a Child and one count of Improper Relationship between Educator and Student by Sexual Contact.  All three charges are felonies. 

The charges stem from a report filed by the victim’s parents on October 27, 2006.  The single victim in the cases is a 14-year-old.

The first alleged incident occurred on October 18, 2006. 

The investigation continues.
