MOTHER DAUGHTER TEAM NAB SUSPECTS
They hit the streets of Midland as a team, helping to protect our community.  Early Tuesday morning, November 14, 2006, it once again paid off.

Gloria Youngblood and daughter Trichelle Barber are volunteers with Citizens On Patrol better known as C.O.P.S.  At any given time, the two are patrolling Midland acting as extra eyes and ears for the Midland Police Department.  At approximately 1:12 a.m. yesterday morning, the two were focusing on three subjects walking on foot near Midkiff and Wall.  The watched as the three disappeared behind a business.  A short time later, they noticed a vehicle driving in the area without headlights.  They followed while another vehicle that seemed to know them drove behind them.  The vehicles were driving at a high rate of speed.  The volunteers noticed new car tags on both vehicles and notified dispatch of possible stolen vehicles.  Officers arrived, and after a short pursuit, stopped both vehicles and arrested two of the three suspects.  The third fled on foot.

20-year-old Naticia Barfield (6-4-86) and 22-year-old Raymond Rando (10-7-84) were arrested for Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity – Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.   Detectives are in the process of getting an arrest warrant for the third suspect.

After it was learned from Britt Motors, the victim of the auto thefts, that a third vehicle was missing, the tow volunteers were determined to find it too.  A short time later, they discovered the third Mercedes parked near Wall and Front with damage on the right side.

The mother/daughter team is responsible for helping recover approximately $150,000 in stolen vehicles and identifying three suspects responsible.

C.O.P.S. volunteers patrol neighborhoods, assist as a deterrent to crime, and help catch criminals.  There are approximately 70 volunteers active in this program with training sessions taking place every month.

Youngblood & Barber have worked as COPS volunteers for six years.

LARGE ITEM PICK UP & YARD WASTE SITES
Part Four – Texas Recycles Week

The City of Midland wants to remind residents of a program that can help remove larger household items.  The Large Item Pick-up program is available with a simple phone call.  Residents can contact the City at 685.7278 to make a reservation.  The year-round service is FREE of charge.

Items that can be picked-up include:  furniture, hot water heaters, toilets, mattresses, etc.  You will be asked to place the item in the alley at your property line (not near the dumpster).  Items will not be removed from private property.

Items that cannot be included in Large Item Pick-up are construction debris (bricks, concrete, rock, gravel, plaster or oil), yard waste (tree branches or shrubs), tires, car batteries, or liquid waste.

Trees and yard waste are recycle-able at the City’s yard waste site north of Veterans Air Park Blvd. at Smith Road or at Discount Materials, located at 4705 Industrial Ave.  Residents may also take yard waste to the landfill and dispose of it for no charge by presenting a copy of their utility bill (water, sewer, garbage bill).

Midlanders can help save landfill space by using these easy and convenient programs and locations.
