CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SAFETY
Midland Police would like to remind everyone of the importance of personal safety this holiday season.  As Christmas approaches, thieves will look for an easy target…make sure you and your family are not one of the victims.

There are some easy tips to follow; police would like to refresh everyone’s memory.

Walk With Someone: Walk in pairs, stay alert to those around you, and if you must walk alone, walk confidently.

Walk Near People: Avoid isolated areas, parks, and parking lots.

Park In A Lighted Area: If you must park away from the store, choose a well lit area and wait to walk to your vehicle until others are walking in that direction.

Protect Your Valuables: Carry only what you need (cash and credit cards limited to what you will use that day), don’t set valuables down, carry a wallet in a front or inside pocket, if you do carry a purse, keep it close to your body.

Lock Your Vehicle: Have your keys in your hand as you walk through the parking lot so you do not have to look down and you can make a quick entry into the vehicle.  Lock the doors when you get back in.

Look Them In The Eye: If approached by a stranger, make eye contact instead of looking away or looking down.  Those who appear more confident are less likely to be a target.

Officers can go into more detail for anyone interested in doing a safety story.  Thanks for your help in getting the word out.

NO DRIPPINGS IN DRAINS
As residents prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving and consume delicious foods, City officials want to remind those doing the cooking and/or cleaning that disposing of grease, oils, and fats properly can keep sewer lines clear.

Each year around the holidays, City of Midland sewer lines are at risk for clogging because residents pour fat-laden foods down the drain. When a clog occurs, raw sewage can back up into homes and seep up at utility covers in the street.

The city urges residents to:

  • Never pour fats, oil, grease, or fatty food scraps into your sink, garbage disposal, or toilet.
  • Scrape or wipe grease and food scraps from pots, pans, grills, and utensils into the trash.
  • Avoid using cloth towels or rags to wipe or scrape plates or clean greasy dishes because the grease will go into the sewer when the towels are washed.
  • Place a strainer over the sink drain when rinsing dishes or when peeling or trimming food.
