DOG PARK NAMING CONTEST
The City of Midland is hosting a contest to name Midland’s Off Leash Dog Park.  The contest is open to the public with suggestions being taken by mail as well as on the Internet.

The dog park, located at Hogan Park, is approaching its one-year anniversary.  It has quickly become one of Midland’s most utilized parks with pet owners, and their four legged friends, visiting regularly.

The contest is an effort to seek a unique name as well as create a sense of community ownership.  The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2007.  All submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. on that date.  A naming committee will then review the suggestions and take them to the Animal Services Advisory Commission in early March.  The Parks & Recreation Commission will then vote and make a recommendation to the City Council.  The City Council will take action on officially naming the dog park before the one-year anniversary.

This is the first time the City has hosted a contest to name a city park.  Park names traditionally originate from a family who donates land for a park, a large monetary contributor for the park construction, or is named after a sports enthusiasts or civic contributor.

The winner of the contest will receive a variety of prizes including free micro chipping for their pets, a design brick at the park, a night in a luxury suite at a RockHounds game, RockHounds hat and shirt, and a leash and collar from PetsMart, and a two night stay at the Happy Paws Pet Hotel in the Luxury Suite.

Submittal forms can be picked up at City Hall, the Midland Health Department, and Senior Centers, local veterinarian clinics, and various businesses.  Papa John’s Pizza will distribute the form with each pizza delivered in February.  Submissions can also be made online at www.midlandtexas.gov.
