FEBRUARY 27th CITY COUNCIL BRIEFS

  • The City Council will consider authorizing the Tennis Center Steering Committee to raise funds on behalf of the City of Midland for a proposed tennis center to be constructed at Beal Park.  The Tennis Center Steering Committee is requesting to raise funds toward a $7.8 million tennis center with the City contributing $1 million after the first $4 million is raised.  The City would be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the facility.  The tennis facility would include 35 courts.  Media Contact: Monette Burke/Director of Community Services at 685.7354
  • The City Council will consider accepting funds from Unequal Productions to be used to help purchase stage curtains for the stage at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.  The group raised $2,000 from the play “Mahalia.”  Stage curtains are estimated to cost $30,000.  Additional fundraising will take place to reach a goal of stage curtains being installed by fall 2007.  Media Contact: Monette Burke/ Director of Community Services at 685.7354

2006 TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORT
The City of Midland's Traffic Engineering Division has completed the 2006 accident report.  A presentation of the annual report will be made to the City Council on Tuesday, February 27, 2007.

The total number of accidents in the City increased 7.2% from 2,975 in 2005 to 3,189 in 2006.

The number of injuries increased from 885 in 2005 to 1,089 in 2006. 

The number of fatalities increased from three in 2005 to six in 2006.

The number of alcohol/and or drug related accidents decreased from 168 in 2005 to 130 in 2006.

There were 18 intersections that had seven or more accidents.

There were no intersections with an M.E.V. (million entering vehicle) rating of 2.0 or above in 2006.  This statistic takes into consideration the number of vehicles that travel through the intersection vs. the number of accidents. 

The following is a list of the five highest accident intersections (according to M.E.V. rating) in the City of Midland during 2006:

1) Midkiff Rd. & Courtyard Dr.                        1.40 M.E.V.

2) A Street & Michigan Ave.                            1.33 M.E.V.

3) Illinois Ave. & Midkiff Rd.                            1.25 M.E.V.

4) Midkiff Rd. & Wall St.                                 1.04 M.E.V.

5) Loop 250 Service Road & Midkiff Rd.          0.98 M.E.V.

The average M.E.V. rating of the intersections listed in the 2006 report is 0.84 compared to 0.87 in 2005 indicating a very low ratio of accidents to traffic volume throughout the City.
