NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
National Night Out is here, and the City of Midland is ready to join the rest of the nation in fighting crime.

On Tuesday, August 7, 2007, hundreds of Midland residents will head outside, joining neighbors, eating good food, and learning more about preventing crime.  City Officials, Police Officers, Firefighters, and Volunteers will be visiting the more than 90 block parties!

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community relations, and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are fighting back.

This is the 24th year Midland has participated in National Night Out.

The following is a list of suggested media highlights:

***6:00 p.m., 300 S. Holly, Garrett Brown Park

Four Block Captains are joining together to host their parties at the park.  The Mobile Substation, McGruff, Safety Pup, Bike Patrol, local mascots, ATVs, Low-Patrol, S.W.A.T., and K-9.  Interim Chief Price Robinson and organizers will be at this location at 5:45 p.m.  This is a great place to start, especially if you plan on setting up a live shot for the 6 p.m. news.

The following three locations are good if you need extra video, pictures, or interviews:

3306 Shandon
Block Captain: Peggy Jezek
6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Bread of Heaven (Carter & Indiana)
Block Captain: Ramona Ball
6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

1601 E. Hickory
Block Captain: Barbara Yarbrough
6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

If you need help in setting up a story idea or live interview, or need directions, call Tina Jauz at 685-7593.

LOOP 250 PATROL
Midland Police will be out in full force beginning early Thursday morning, August 2, 2007.  The media is invited to join two-squads of officers as they work directed patrol on Loop 250.  Those interested should meet in the parking lot of Academy at 8:30 a.m.

The Mass Directed Patrol will be aimed at traffic enforcement on Loop 250.  They will concentrate on speeding and drivers disregarding yield signs.

Just last week, the MPD worked directed patrol on Loop 250 and handed out more than 50 speeding tickets in one afternoon.

The MPD and City often hear concerns from citizens regarding speeders along Loop 250.  Additionally, the yield signs are a source of concern.
