CITY CREWS REPAIRING INDUSTRIAL AVENUE
The City of Midland Transportation Division is busy patching up potholes on Industrial Avenue.  The work is the result of an agreement reached this week between Union Pacific Railroad and the City.

The agreement grants a temporary lease of the road to the city.  This provides the authority to perform maintenance.  The approximate two-mile stretch of road falls within the railroad’s property and must be treated as a private road.

The agreement provides a temporary solution to the situation on Industrial Avenue.  The City Council will discuss options for the future at a later date.

BICYCLE SCHOOL
Officers with the Midland Police Department will attend a week long school on two wheels.  The media is invited to attend on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot just west of the MPD.  Reporters are invited to ride-along.

The class will begin with a day of classroom work followed by an obstacle course on Wednesday, more work on the bikes on Thursday, as well as work on the roads in different parts of the city.

The bicycle is an effective tool in law enforcement.  Officers on bicycles can often ride up on a crime in process without anyone realizing an officer has arrived.  In addition, riding a bicycle is a benefit to the officer’s health providing great aerobic activity.

This will be the first class taught at the MPD under the International Police Mountain Bike Association guidelines.  Officers from the City of Odessa Street Crimes Unit will also attend.

SEAL COATING UPDATE
The City of Midland will wrap up work on this year’s seal coating project during the week of September 4, 2007. The final target area will include:

Midland Drive from Mockingbird Lane to Island Drive
Midkiff Road from Bluebird Lane to Mockingbird Lane

The target area for this year includes arterials and collector streets within the area of Holiday Hill Road to Midkiff Road from Loop 250 to the North city limits.

Motorists should exercise caution and drive slowly when traveling through these areas.  Flagmen will assist in directing the flow of traffic.

An oil and two percent latex solution is used with crushed gravel on top.  This increases the longevity of Midland’s existing streets, adding 15-20 years of life and reducing reconstruction costs.

Seal coating takes place in different areas of the city each year.  The same area receives treatment every six or seven years.  Media Contact: Bobby Garcia/ Transportation Division Superintendent at 685.7299
