EMPLOYEE RECRUITING INITIATIVES
The City of Midland is thinking “outside the box” when it comes to recruiting top-notch employees.  Every business is feeling the effects of the tight labor market and the City of Midland is no different.  On Tuesday, a presentation was made to the City Council regarding the many new, and different, ways the City is recruiting potential employees.

Earlier this year, the City hired an employee recruiter to work with departments and divisions in filling vacancies.  From strengthening network ties to unveiling new marketing strategies, the City is leading the way in attracting employees.

The recruiting initiatives go beyond job fairs, although the City has tripled the number attended just this year.  Billboards, movie advertisements, and radio spots are all a part of the new plan.

Last year, the City jumped on the Internet with jobs sites such as Monster.com and Yahoo.  There are several success stories tied to advertising via the Internet.  Along with this move, the City went “paperless” with applications being accepted online from home, office, or even at one of the stations located in City Hall.

A pilot program with radio advertising had positive results this past spring.  In fact, the City decided to turn to radio once again this fall in an effort to recruit CDL drivers for positions in Solid Waste, Utilities, and Transportation.

If you’ve been to the movies lately, chances are you may have noticed an advertisement for employment opportunities with the Midland Police Department.  The ad has been running for three weeks on all 14 screens at Hollywood Theatre just prior to the movie previews.  The ad will change the weekend of Thanksgiving to promote job opportunities for the entire City.

Billboards advertising the City of Midland’s employment opportunities are popping up in the region.  On November 1st, two billboards went up; one on Business 20 near the drive-in theatre as motorists are traveling into Midland and the other on Interstate 20 near Stanton for those traveling westbound into Midland.  Other sites being considered include between Midland and Lubbock and west of Odessa near Monahans for those traveling eastbound.

Videos are also being produced to promote Midland.  One such video, a 30-second spot for the Midland Police Department, is airing at Grande Communications Stadium during football games.  A video showcasing Midland is complete and will soon be placed on the City’s website, cable access station, and will be used at the Rankin Highway Visitors Center.

The City of Midland recruiter is also busy building ties with regional universities and colleges to promote municipal employment opportunities as well as internships for those who have not yet graduated.  She is also focusing on building the explorer programs within the Fire and Police Departments.

Opportunities Abound in Midland and that message is being heard around the region, state, and country thanks to the new initiatives now in place.
