EMPLOYEE TEAM TO RACE FOR WISHES
They will be up early, bundled up, and ready to go!  More than 20 City of Midland employees will participate in the first Midland Walk for Wishes to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  The walk will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2007, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Scharbauer Sports Complex.  The City of Midland is a co-sponsor of the event.

The walk is a culmination of weeks of fundraising activity.  City of Midland employees came together to organize a team.  The “City of Midland Dream Catchers” have been busy collecting donations in hopes of being one of the top fundraising teams.  Some team members plan to walk while others will participate in the 5K run.

You can Help Make a Wish come true by donating to the City of Midland's Dream Catchers' Walk for Wishes team.  Make a donation online by visiting http://westtexasraceforwishes.kintera.org/cityofmidland.  You can donate to the team or pick out an individual team member you would like to support.   The Dream Catchers are attempting to raise enough money to support one wish - $6,000.

WADLEY AVENUE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
If you have traveled down Wadley Avenue in west Midland this week, you can’t help but notice the large construction area.  The City of Midland kicked off the Wadley Avenue Reconstruction Project last week and it is now in full swing.  Motorists will need to use caution and patience during the next 10-weeks.

The entire project includes new pavement and surfacing from Godfrey to Loop 250 and from A Street to I Street.  Three intersections will be repaved as well – A Street and Wadley, and Midland Drive and Wadley, and Midkiff and Wadley.

Contractors are currently working on Wadley from Godfrey to the Loop.  Motorists will be glad to know that the three dips in the roadway are not permanent.  In fact, the contractor will be making the temporary surface a bit smoother on Friday, November 16th.  In addition, speed limit signs of 25 miles per hour have been placed near the dips in the roadway to remind motorists to travel slowly in the construction zone.

On November 21st, construction should be complete at the intersection of Midland Drive and Wadley.  Workers anticipate moving their focus to the intersection of A Street and Wadley following the Thanksgiving holiday.  This phase will take approximately four weeks.

During the reconstruction of this intersection, in early December, contractors will begin milling the concrete from Godfrey to the Loop which involves taking off the old concrete.  They will then lay a new asphalt base.  A minimum of one lane of traffic each direction will be open for the approximate three week phase.

Crews will cease work during the Christmas and New Year holidays.  After the New Year, reconstruction will begin on the intersection of Midkiff and Wadley.  This will take approximately 4 weeks to complete.  Also during this time, the final surface of pavement will be laid from Godfrey to the Loop.

All intersection work will reduce traffic to one lane each direction.

The project is similar to the North Midkiff Road reconstruction that took place last year.  However, handicap access and sidewalks are already in place.  The end result will be a smoother driving surface with a projected life of 25 years.
