SCAM WARNING
Midland Police are warning residents of yet another scam. On November 28, 2007, officers responded to a call from a woman stating she received a fraudulent check in the mail for $3,200.
The scam appears to work like this…A check comes in the mail; this particular one was from Lou Sobh Automotive out of Georgia. The letter states the resident was randomly selected as a winner of a lottery. Once the unsuspecting person attempts to cash the check, the scammers are able to obtain their bank account information. The scammers then electronically attempt to withdraw funds from the victim’s account.
Midland Police ask citizens to remember – if it sounds too good to be true – it probably is. Beware of checks arriving in the mail stating you have won a lottery that you did not enter. It is suspected these letters are being mailed out to random victims.
Police also warn residents not to provide bank account information to people over the phone. This time of year, many people, particularly senior citizens, fall victim to scammers.
PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY RESULTS
Midland Police have received a copy of a preliminary autopsy report on a teenager who died following a fight at Lee High School.
The report states 17-year-old Devon Ewing died of blunt force trauma to the head.
After taking statements from students and faculty, and receiving the preliminary autopsy report, the Midland Police Department has concluded its investigation into the incident and the case has been turned over to the District Attorney’s Office.
DRUG ARRESTS
Midland Police have arrested two persons in connection with a drug bust late last night, November 28, 2007.
The MPD Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at an east Midland apartment complex last night at approximately 9:00 p.m. Inside the apartment, they found 3 ½ pounds of crack cocaine and over $15,000 in cash. The crack cocaine has an estimated street value of $157,000.
43-year-old James Howard (7-23-64) and 36-year-old Dodionne Watson (11-14-71) were arrested and charged with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Crack Cocaine. Howard lived at the apartment where the search warrant was executed. They are both being held at the Midland County Detention Center.
The arrests and seizure follow a several month investigation by the MPD. The Midland DEA assisted with the investigation and search warrant.
No further information is available at this time.
