JANUARY 8th CITY COUNCIL MEETING
-
The City Council will recognize a group of employees and volunteers for their efforts to keep Midland safe. The Midland Police Department was recently recognized for their efforts in organizing the annual National Night Out. The event took place on August 7, 2007. In the National Association of Town Watch competition, Midland, Texas placed 13th out of 33 award winners in Category 2. There were hundreds of entries in this category, which represents cities with a population of 100,000 to 299,999. This was the Midland’s first year to compete in this category, with cities like, Modesto, CA., Orlando, FL., Saint Paul, MN., and Plano, TX. From 1998 to 2006 Midland competed in Category 3, population 50,000 to 99,999. Out of the nine years in this category MPD was award winners eight years out of the nine.

The City Council will consider approving plans for a batting facility at Christensen Stadium. The Midland College baseball program utilizes Christensen Stadium as their home field. The program is in need of a batting facility that will allow players to take batting practice regardless of the weather conditions. The proposed facility will be a 40-foot by 80-foot structure estimated to cost $50,000. Midland College is paying for the structure to be built on City property. The completed facility will be city owned and can be used by companies that rent Christensen Stadium for their annual employee picnics.

The Council will also consider appropriation of funds for further improvements at Hogan’s Run Dog Park. When the City began development of the dog park several years ago, the Permian Basin Area Foundation set up an account to accept citizens’ donations. There is currently $3,226.10 remaining in the fund. The money would be used for walking trails, additional trees, and a water feature.
