JANUARY SALES TAX REVENUES
The City of Midland has collected this month's revenue from the State Comptroller's Office.  The total amount of revenue received was $1,756,190.

This month's figure reflects a 6.78% increase or an $111,486 increase from January 2007.

The year-to-date total sales tax revenue for fiscal year 2007-2008 is up 10.35% or a $705,673 increase from last year's totals at this time.  Fiscal year-to-date actual sales tax revenue is $7,525,562.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; January collection is based on November sales.

This is the 52nd consecutive month of increased sales tax revenues when compared to the same month the prior year.

TEMPORARY STREET CLOSURE
The City of Midland Transportation Division is scheduled to fog seal the newly chip sealed Oriole Drive on Friday, January 11, 2008

Beginning mid-morning, portions of Oriole Drive will be closed to through traffic as the fog seal progresses.  The project is estimated to last one or two days, weather permitting.  Other streets within the chip seal area may be fog sealed at a later date as needed.

Fog seal is a method of adding asphalt to an existing pavement surface to improve sealing or waterproofing, prevent further stone loss by holding aggregate in place, or simply improve the surface appearance.  Fog seal is a mixture of emulsion and water applied by spraying the surface of the pavement.

Motorists are urged to reduce speed, observe barricades, and use caution while workers are present.

POND STOCKING
Two ponds located at City of Midland parks will be freshly stocked with fish.

The ponds at CJ Kelly, 5500 League Drive, and Beal Park, 5200 W. Wall, have been cleared for stocking.  The stocking will take place on Thursday, January 10, 2008, and January 30, 2008.  The City is asking residents to please wait until Saturday, January 12th to begin fishing and then not fish starting January 30th and ending on February 1st, beginning back on Saturday, February 2nd.  This will allow the fish to get acclimated to the ponds before the fishing begins.

All state fishing laws apply at these two ponds and both ponds are monitored by state game wardens.  For more information on the State of Texas fishing laws, visit the TPWD website, www.tpwd.state.tx.us.

NEW RECYLCING TRUCK ARRIVES
The City of Midland will have a new addition to its fleet.  Four new refuse trucks are hitting the streets and one is dedicated to picking up recyclable materials.

The unveiling of the new “Recycle Red, White, and Blue, It’s the Right Thing to Do” recycling truck will take place on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 3:30 p.m. at the City of Midland Solid Waste Division located at 600 North Carver.

One year ago, the City started collection of a 50¢ per month per customer recycling fee.  The fee was initiated to pay for annual costs of two trucks and two drivers. In eleven months, the fee collected $192,543 to help purchase the equipment.

Up until now, recycling services have been provided utilizing regular refuse trucks.  In 2007, the City recycled 1,810 tons of materials through a contractor and recycled 139 tons of materials at the landfill.

There are approximately 353 3- to 3-1/2-cu-yd recycle containers located at schools.  The recycle containers have all been repainted to reflect the “Recycle Red, White, and Blue – It’s the right thing to Do” campaign.  Keep Midland Beautiful is working on citizen education with regard to what can be recycled and how to make the program successful with radio and T.V. ads and mail outs.  Information about the City’s recycling program is also available on the City’s web site at www.midlandtexas.gov.
