FLU VACCINE STILL AVAILABLE
With flu classified as widespread in the state of Texas for the last two weeks, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) officials and the Midland Health Department are reminding people to take precautions to reduce the risk of getting and spreading the viral illness.
According to health officials, getting a flu vaccination is one of the best ways to prevent getting and spreading the illness.
The Midland Health Department still has doses of the vaccination. The cost is $10. The department is open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. Vaccination is recommended for people ages 6 months and older.
DSHS health officials offer the following additional precautions:
- Wash your hands fre
- Cover your coughs and sneezes
- Stay home if you’re sick.
The Texas flu season typically runs October through March.
The flu vaccine, which takes about two weeks to become fully effective, can be given at any time during this period. People wanting the flu vaccine should call the Midland Health Department at 681.7613 or check with your physician.
The flu is not a reportable condition in Texas, but DSHS relies on reports from a surveillance network to classify flu activity in the state. The widespread classification applies when there are increases in flu-like illnesses and recent laboratory-confirmed flu cases in at least half of the state's regions.
BANK ROBBERY UPDATE
A second person has been arrested in connection with the Bank Robber that occurred on Friday, January 25, 2008, at 601 E. Florida, Community National Bank.
17-year-old Jose Rosales (11-7-90) is charged with Aggravated Robbery in connection with Friday’s incident. The arrest occurred later on Friday by the MPD. Rosales was the driver of the truck that the actor got into after the Robbery.
The other suspect, 25-year-old Eric Andrew Rios (9-21-82), was charged with Bank Robbery by the FBI.
Midland Police were called to the scene of a Bank Robbery at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Rios walked into the bank and stood around in the lobby before approaching the teller counter. Once the teller asked him how she could help, he handed her a note directing her to give him all the money in the drawer and that he had a gun and would kill her. When the teller wasn’t moving fast enough, Rios verbally told her that she should hurry or he would kill her.
There were other customers inside the bank at the time of the Robbery as well as other employees. The clerk handed him the cash and he left out the west door of the bank. Rios walked across Terrell Street and got into a Ford F-150 driven by Rosales.
Witnesses were able to show police the direction of where the truck traveled. In addition, a Midland County Constable was inside the bank at the time of the Robbery. The Constable and a Patrol Officer stopped the truck at the intersection of Florida and Marienfeld. The two men were taken into custody. Cash from the bank as well as a weapon were recovered inside the truck.
The FBI is investigating the case.
