VEST DONATION
Students and parents of a Midland School are doing their party to help protect the police officers that work to keep our community safe by donating to the Midland Police Department’s Invest In A Vest Program.
On Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., the students of Carver Center will donate $668.64 toward the purchase of a bulletproof vest. The event will take place at the school, 1300 E. Wall Street.
Teachers were looking for a project aimed at character education. They decided to place jars in every classroom and collect change in an effort to raise enough funds to purchase one police officer a bullet proof vest. The 357 students reached their goal and then some.
The Invest In A Vest Program was started in 1993. More than 200 vests have been purchased through the program.
The cost of each vest is approximately $564. Every Midland Police Department officer is issued body armor. The company manufacturing the vests offers a five-year warranty.
With every vest donation, the name of the company, organization, or individual is placed on the side of the patrol car of the officer who is wearing the donated vest.
PROMOTION
The Midland Fire Department will promote an employee to higher ranks. A ceremony will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Central Fire Station.
Fire Driver Doug Van Zandt will move to the rank of Captain. Van Zandt has been with the department for almost 10 years.

CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY BEGINS
The Midland Police Department will kick-off its 33rd class of the Citizens Police Academy.
The CPA class begins Tuesday, February 5, 2008, and continues every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. for 6 weeks. The class will gather in the third floor classroom of the MPD.
The students will gain a working knowledge of the everyday operation of the Midland Police Department. The citizens enrolled are provided with information to help them better understand the day-to-day business which includes class lectures, firearms instruction, a chance to ride-along with police officers, canine demonstrations, SWAT, and the opportunity to investigate a mock crime scene. All training is provided at no cost.
Officers hope that graduates take their new knowledge into the community and educate others when opportunity arises and make decisions that affect the City and PD with heightened awareness and better information.
The media is invited to help make this an exciting time for the students.
