PRECAUTIONS FOR GRASS FIRES
High winds predicted for our area this week will increase the chance of more wildfires.

The Midland Fire department would like to inform citizens about the growing danger of grass fires in our area.   By taking some extra precautions and keeping grass and weeds trimmed, citizens can help protect their property from being involved in a fire.

Precautions that can help prevent grass fires around the home are:

  • Keep grasses and weeds mowed
  • Keep areas cleared of vegetation around buildings and other combustible materials.
  • Any outdoor activities that may pose a fire threat such as welding or bar-b-ques should be monitored closely.
  • Safety tips: Monitor television and radio stations if a wildfire is nearing your area.  It is important to keep informed of any wildfire around the city or county that could affect your neighborhood.  For information regarding active fires or safety information call 432.685.7332.

Be prepared to evacuate in case of fire.  Grass fires in our area move very rapidly and you may be asked to leave your homes at a moment’s notice.  Cooperate with local fire and law enforcement agencies in evacuation areas.  Evacuations are ordered to protect and provide for the safety of citizens.  Do not re-enter evacuation areas until it is safe.

FOG SEAL
On Friday, February 29, 2008, the City of Midland Transportation Division will be applying a fog seal on Briarwood Avenue between Northcrest Drive and Oriole Drive.  Fog seal will also be applied on Holiday Hill Road between Briarwood Avenue and Loop 250.

***This is the final phase of the current fog seal project in northwest Midland.

Street Maintenance crews will begin placing traffic control devices around 8:30 a.m.  The outside lanes will be sealed first.  Freshly sealed lanes will be closed to traffic and reopened after a brief curing period.  North and south bound traffic will have access during the seal.  We urge the public to slow down and observe all traffic control devices, especially the Fresh Oil signs.

A fog seal consists of an emulsified asphalt diluted with water.  It has many uses, but for this particular situation, it should help hold back further separation of gravel from the pavement surface.

City officials thank the public for their patience during this inconvenience.
