CHILI COOK-OFF
City of Midland employees will gather for a fundraiser on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Central Fire Station.  The 2nd Annual Chili Cook-off will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The event will benefit the Midland Municipal Employee Scholarship Fund (MMESF).  Each year, the MMESF awards scholarships to qualifying students who are dependents of City of Midland employees.  Employees can sign up at any time to contribute.  A payroll deduction of only $1 a pay period helps to raise the funds that are used each year to award the scholarships.

In 2007, the MMESF awarded scholarships to seventeen college bound students.  They each received $500.  To date, the generosity of City employees has resulted in 185 scholarships totaling $97,300.

The event is for City of Midland employees.  The media is invited to attend.

SWEARING-IN CEREMONY
The Midland Police Department will welcome a new officer.  The swearing-in ceremony will take place on Friday, April 11, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the third floor classroom.

Andy Hill will take the oath of office.  Hill is and experienced officer having worked for 11 years with the Abilene Police Department.  He has also worked outside of law enforcement for seven years.  Hill chose to make his return to law enforcement with the Midland Police Department.

He will move on to the Field Training Officer (FTO) program as Probationary Police Officer (PPO) for 17-weeks.  During this time, he will be teamed up with experienced officers and rated daily on his performance in the field as well as paper work.

The media is invited to attend and to help make this a special day for this officer.

The City of Midland has collected this month's revenue from the State Comptroller's Office.  The total amount of revenue received was $1,597,787.

This month's figure reflects a 5.57% increase or an $84,367 increase from April 2007.

The year-to-date total sales tax revenue for fiscal year 2007-2008 is up 10.54% or a $1,294,283 increase from last year's totals at this time.  Fiscal year-to-date actual sales tax revenue is $13,570,784.

Sales tax revenue is generated by sales tax income from two months prior to collection; April collection is based on February sales.

This is the 55th consecutive month of increased sales tax revenues when compared to the same month the prior year.
