WATER SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION
The City of Midland Utilities Department is asking for the cooperation of all residents during the installation of new equipment. The project is part of the water system improvements that will increase water pressure and the volume of water throughout the city.

Beginning Monday, April 21, 2008, the city will be draining water storage tanks and pipes in preparation for installation of new valves.  During the draining procedure, there will be a large quantity of water running down alleys and streets in the general area of Illinois Avenue and Midland Drive.  Motorists are asked to watch for flashing lights and closed intersections in this area.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 22 & 23, 2008, the city will have to shut down a portion of the system to complete the valve installation.  Citizens are asked to watch their water use during these two days and refrain from using water outdoors.

APRIL 22nd CITY COUNCIL MEETING

  • During the regular meeting at 10:00 a.m., the Midland City Council will consider two items that could provide new training equipment at the Midland Police Department Firearms Training Facility.  The first item has the Council considering acceptance of $87,420 from the FBI for improvements to the facility.  The FBI has received funding for the purchase of a new 25-position turning target system.  The agreement would allow the FBI to use the facility once a month for the next 30-years.  Also, the Council will consider the actual purchase of the target system for $67,472.  The remainder of the funds will be used for other facility improvements.
  • The City Council will consider approving a local group to raise funds for a proposed BMX Park to be constructed at Reyes/Mashburn/Nelms Park.  West Texas BMX is requesting to raise funds toward a $173,000 BMX Park with the city contributing matching funds.  The City of Midland would be responsible for maintenance and operation of such a facility.  West Texas BMX plans to host competitive events following the completion of the project.
  • The City Council will also consider two items of interest to the Midland Fire Department.  The first item would allow acceptance of a $214,400 grant to purchase equipment to protect firefighter’s health.  The Assistance to Firefighters Grant would provide funds to install systems designed to remove gasoline and diesel engine exhaust from the emergency vehicle storage areas in the fire stations.  The second item would allow the MFD to apply for the 2008 Assistance to Firefighters grant in the amount of $964,800.  The funds would be used to help purchase a wild land firefighting apparatus and protective clothing for fighting wild land fires.
