MAY 13th CITY COUNCIL MEETING

  • APPROVED: The City Council approved an agreement with Midland Mad Dog Rugby Football Club.  The agreement allows the club to provide a men’s rugby program (ages 18-40) at city parks.  The agreement is similar to those with other sports organizations in the city.
  • APPROVED: The Council approved awarding a contract for construction of a two-million-gallon Elevated Water Storage Tower.  The tower will be located near the northeast corner of Mockingbird and Avalon Drive.  Landmark Structures would build the tower for an estimated $2.9 million.
  • APPROVED: The Council will consider an item that would help provide incentives to new air carriers wanting to service Midland International Airport.  In February, the Council approved the Airline Retention and Recruitment Project allowing the airport to contract with a consultant to assist in retaining and recruiting airline service.  Such marketing incentives are becoming common among air carriers in today’s market.
  • APPROVED: The Council will consider approving the purchase of a video board for Citibank Ball Park.  The $413,329 video board will be similar to the one at Grande Communications Stadium.  With the RockHounds monetary contribution, and annual advertising revenues, the city will recoup the purchase amount in approximately six years.
  • A public hearing will be held at 7:00 p.m. as part of the process of developing the 2008/09 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Action Plan.  A total of $900,331 in CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be allocated to the City for the 2008/098 CDBG program.  This is a reduction of $29,092 from the $929,423 grant in 2007/08.  The purpose of the public hearing will be to inform the public of past usage of CDBG funds, allow staff to present applications and proposals for the use of CDBG funds, and to receive input and receive comment or concerns which could be addressed with the 2008/09 funding.  The City Council is expected to reach a preliminary decision regarding the distribution of funds.  A second public hearing will be held on June 10, 2008.
