CROSSING ACCIDENT REDUCTION ENFORCEMENT
The Midland Police Department will team up with Union Pacific Railroad to help raise awareness of train safety and reduce the number of accidents. On May 20, 2008, officers with the MPD Traffic Division will ride with Union Pacific Railroad and alert other officers in their vehicles of any motorists not obeying the signs, lights, or crossing gates. The media is invited to ride along too.
Officers will write tickets and issue citations to those disobeying the law. The program is designed to draw attention to the dangers of trying to “beat” a train. MPD officers will ride from Fairgrounds Road, beginning at 7:00 a.m., through the City and back.
Union Pacific reminds drivers that it is hard to tell how fast a train is traveling. In Texas, the main cause of railroad crossing accidents is motorists that choose to disobey warning signs.
There are 11 railroad crossings inside Midland’s city limits. All of the crossings have gates.
***Media*** If you are interested in riding along with the officers on Union Pacific, please contact Tina Jauz for arrangements. It does not have to be at 7:00 a.m. We can arrange for you to “catch up” with them at a location. Thanks.

PURSUIT
Midland Police arrested two men this morning, May 19, 2008, after a car chase in west Midland and Midland County.
Police were called to the 4300 block of Tanner in reference to a stolen vehicle. A woman reported that she was flagged down sometime before 7:00 a.m. by two men. She drove them to her residence on Tanner and attempted to get them out of the truck. They refused, shoved her out of the truck, took the keys, and fled in the white Dodge 4 x 4.
As the officer is taking the report, the woman sees the truck, still occupied by the two men, driving down the street. The officer gets into his patrol car and attempts to stop the truck. A pursuit took place traveling west on Illinois, north on Loop 250, and then west on 191. The pursuit got up to 60 mph on Illinois and at the speed of traffic on 191.
When the officers were approaching the intersection of Faudree Road, the suspect rammed into the back of a patrol vehicle pushing it and the officer off the road. The suspect then traveled through a field just north of 191 where he hit a culvert and came to a stop. Officers apprehended the two men.
29-year-old Gary Bell (2-16-79), the driver of the truck, was arrested for Robbery, DWI, and Evading in a Motor Vehicle. The passenger, 30-year-old Deric Leavitt (10-19-77), was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication.
The entire pursuit lasted approximately 15 minutes.
