This is the first time the week-long academy will be opened to the public.  The prior two academies were for employee children only.  Space is limited, so those interested in participating should sign up as soon as possible. The students will have the opportunity to learn about the police department and hear from officers and detectives.  Sessions are planned in the dispatch/911 area, with patrol, crime scene investigations, bike patrol, municipal court, Culver Youth Center, K-9, SWAT, mobile substation, gang unit, EOD, and gun safety at the firing range.

FATALITY
Midland Police are now investigating a fatal accident after a 32-year-old woman dies as a result of the injuries she received in the collision yesterday.

The accident happened on Sunday, June 15, 2008, at the intersection of Lamesa Road and Cuthbert.  A 1997 green GEO Prism, driven by 32-year-old Rosalinda Carrasco, was headed northbound on Lamesa in the right lane.  A grey Honda Civic, driven by 36-yer-old Denise Kelly, and occupied by five passengers, was also traveling northbound on Lamesa in the left lane.  Carrasco attempted to make a left turn, turning in front of the Civic.  The Civic hit the Prism and knocked it into a 2005 GMC SUV.

Carrasco was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital where she died just after midnight.  Her passenger, Manuel Carrasco was not transported.  All six passengers of the Civic were transported with non life threatening injuries.  No one from the GMC was transported.  All the persons involved in the accident were from Midland.

The investigation continues.
