BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS VACANCIES
The City of Midland is currently seeking applications from residents interested in appointments to various boards and commissions. The City utilizes term limits which create a turnover in membership. As the City approaches the beginning of a new fiscal year, there are 54 total expirations and vacancies on 14 separate boards and commissions. The City Council will begin making appointments in September for the terms beginning October 1, 2008. The terms vary from two to four years and meetings vary from monthly to quarterly or as needed. The following is a list of Boards/Commissions which will have open seats:
Airport Planning and Development Board – 3 seats
CDBG Target Area Selection Committee – 3 seats
City Development Advisory Committee – 2 seats
Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals – 3 seats
Hotel/Motel Tax Advisory Board – 3 seats
Housing Authority Commission – 3 seats
Midland Center Advisory Board – 2 seats
Midland Crime Prevention Commission – 13 seats
Midland Housing Finance Corporation – 3 seats
Midland-Odessa Urban Transit District Board – 3 seats
Parks and Recreation Commission – 3 seats
Planning and Zoning Commission – 3 seats
Water Resources Committee – 5 seats
Zoning Board of Adjustment and Airport Zoning Board of Adjustment – 5 seats
Applications are available at the City Secretary’s office, Room 330, City Hall, 685.7430. The application can also be downloaded from the City web site at www.midlandtexas.gov (select City Government, then click on Boards and Commissions). Deadline for application is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2008.
SWEARING-IN CEREMONY
The City of Midland will hold a swearing-in ceremony at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at the Midland City Council Chambers, 300 N. Loraine. An At-Large City Council Member was elected on July 22, 2008.

Morales will fill the remainder of the term on the seat vacated by Bill Dingus.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
National Night Out is here, and the City of Midland is ready to join the rest of the nation in fighting crime. On Tuesday, August 5, 2008, hundreds of Midland residents will head outside, joining neighbors, eating good food, and learning more about preventing crime. City Officials, Police Officers, Firefighters, and Volunteers will be visiting the more than 90 block parties! National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community relations, and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are fighting back. This is the 25th Anniversary National Night Out. Midland has participated in National Night Out for the past nine years and 16 years of Midland Night Out. Our Lady of San Juan Church will be hosting their party at the park. The Mobile Substation, McGruff, Safety Pup, Bike Patrol, local mascots, ATVs, Low-Patrol, S.W.A.T., and K-9. Interim Chief Price Robinson and organizers will be at this location at 5:45 p.m. This is a great place to start, especially if you plan on setting up a live shot for the 6 p.m. news. The following three locations are good if you need extra video, pictures, or interviews:

OPEN HOUSE

The Midland Fire Department would like to extend an invitation to the community to join them on Saturday, August 23, 2008, from noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Central Fire Station, 1500 West Wall. This is not just an open house but also an annual community event that is open free to the public. It is educational and fun! They will demonstrate the skills involved in living up to the motto, "Proud Professionals Protecting the Community."
Activities will include: Free food and drinks. Prizes will be given away. Safety information distributed and demonstrated. Rescue and EMS (ambulance equipment demonstrated).
Special Equipment Demonstrations: Jaws of Life Demonstration, Snorkel and Aerial Trucks, Rope Rescue, Pluggie, Rescue Airbags, Rescue Cam Demo’s, and the Fire Safety House.
Special Features: Blockbuster Video will sponsor Project Kid Print again this year. At no cost to you, they will make a DVD I.D. of your child. You provide the child, and Blockbuster Video will provide the DVD. Those who already have a DVD can bring it to update.
Public Safety Communications will demonstrate equipment presently used in Fire and EMS communications, as well as provide 911 information and brochures. Midland's 911 District will be represented. The National Weather Service will also have a booth. The Midland RockHounds will also have their mascots attending.
Tours of the station, all equipment, and the fire museum will be available. Everyone is encouraged to attend in support of our local firefighters.

Attention all chocolate lovers! Looking to put a stop to the end of summer blues? Why not consider indulging yourself in some chocolate?
The City of Midland’s Scarborough/Linebery House, 802 S. Main, will host a luncheon, Tuesday, August 19, 2008, beginning at 11:30 am.
The public is invited to enjoy lunch with chocolate served before & after. The cost is only $15.00 per person and will go toward the maintenance of Midland’s second oldest historic home.
