CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY SEEKS APPLICANTS
The Midland Police Department is now accepting applications for people interested in participating in the 34th class of the Citizens Police Academy.

The CPA class begins on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, and continues every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. for 6 weeks with graduation planned in November.

It is an opportunity for citizens to gain a working knowledge of the everyday operation of the Midland Police Department. Citizens are provided with information to help them better understand the day-to-day business which includes class lectures, firearms instruction, a chance to ride-along with police officers, canine demonstrations, SWAT, and the opportunity to investigate a mock crime scene. All training is provided at no cost.

Officers hope that graduates take their new knowledge into the community and educate others when opportunity arises and make decisions that affect the City and PD with heightened awareness and better information.

Applications can be picked up at the Midland Police Department, 601 N. Loraine or are available online at www.midlandtexas.gov. Click on Residents, then Police Department, then Support Services Bureau.

YARD WASTE SITE CLOSED
The City of Midland’s yard waste site will close temporarily while workers remove the waste, mulch, and clean up the site. The contractor should be completed with the mulching by Wednesday, August 27, 2008, and the site will reopen at that time.

Residents wanting a location to dump yard waste should visit Discount Materials, located at 4705 W. Industrial, until the City site reopens. Residents should also be reminded that mattresses, toilets, lumber, furniture, bricks, and other non-yard waste materials should not be dumped at the yard waste site. Placing these types of items at the site is considered illegal dumping. Residents and business owners should be aware of the fines associated with illegal dumping.

The City of Midland has a large-item pickup program. Residents can simply call the city at 685.7278 and request a pickup for non-yard waste items. Businesses are reminded to utilize the city landfill for dumping purposes.

The City mulches the yard waste deposited at the site. The process includes grinding the branches into smaller wood chips that are collected directly into a 30 cubic yard container. The full container is loaded onto a truck and hauled to the landfill. There, the material is used to cover the landfill.
